Best practices for USB MCU updates

Are you trying to update the MCU on your BirdDog device? 

There are some things that typically prove helpful in this situation, and we have included them for you here!


  • We have found that formatting the drive to FAT16 (instead of FAT32 as listed in our documentation) can sometimes fix this issue. 

  • Change the media type from GPT to MBR: Link here to Microsoft support article

  • Try partitioning it to 256MB instead of the 8/2GB recommendation in some of our other documentation. If you need help with formatting, see this video article here: How to Format USB Drive for Baseboard Update 

  • Attempt as many USB drives as you have on hand.

  • If you are in the US, we use the following drive in our offices and it has so far worked wonders for other customers that have given it a try.  In our experience it has a high success rate for units that are not experiencing a genuine malfunction.  Link HERE.
