Understanding Advanced Auto Focus (AF) Modes

The BirdDog X-Series (X1, X1 30x, X1 Ultra) and MAX cameras feature advanced Auto Focus (AF) Scene modes that optimize the camera's focus algorithms for specific use cases. By selecting the appropriate mode, you can ensure sharp, reliable focus for any shooting environment.

These modes are accessed via the camera's Web User Interface (BirdUI) under the CamControl sub menu Advanced.

1. Auto Focus Scene Modes

The Scene setting customizes the camera's focus priorities and range limits based on your subject distance and production environment.

Scene ModeIntended Use CaseNear Focus Distance (Wide End)Near Focus Distance (Tele End)Description
NormalGeneral-Purpose / Video Conferencing1 meter (3.28 ft)3 meters (9.84 ft)The default mode, offering a balanced and reliable focus for typical room settings, meetings, and standard presentations where subjects are generally standing or sitting at a distance.
LiveLive Streaming / Dynamic Events1 meter (3.28 ft)3 meters (9.84 ft)Optimized for live broadcast or event scenarios. This mode enhances the responsiveness of the focus system to keep subjects sharp in dynamic environments, prioritizing a quick lock on the main subject.
MacroClose-up / Tabletop / Product Shots2 – 30 cm (0.84 - 11.76 in) 3 meters (9.84 ft)Ideal for extreme close-up photography, product demonstrations, or capturing fine details. It enables the lens to focus on objects very close to the camera, primarily when the camera is zoomed out (Wide end).

2. Auto Focus Zone Settings

The AF Zone allows you to specify which area of the frame the camera should prioritize when determining the focal point.

AF ZoneDescriptionBest For
AllFocus is evaluated across the entire image frame equally.Scenarios where the subject may move throughout the frame, or where multiple points of interest exist.
CenterFocus is concentrated in the middle of the frame.Standard, centrally composed shots like a single presenter at a podium or in a studio.
Top, Bottom, Left, RightFocus is prioritized to the corresponding section of the frame.Specific compositions (e.g., using the rule of thirds) or scenes where the main subject is positioned off-center.

3. Auto Focus Sensitivity Settings

This setting controls how quickly and aggressively the camera responds to changes in the scene that might require a focus adjustment (known as 'focus hunting').

AF SensitivityDescriptionBest For
HighFocus reacts rapidly and immediately to changes.Highly dynamic environments, fast-moving sports, or subjects frequently moving in and out of the focal plane.
MiddleProvides a balanced, moderate response to focus changes. Most general-purpose filming, offering stability while still reacting reliably to new subjects.
LowFocus responds slowly, prioritizing stability over speed.Static scenes, interviews, or minimal movement where smooth, stable focus is crucial to avoid distracting "hunting."
